Big Society by Design

Dott Cornwall's Programme Director Andrea Siodmok has created a presentation called 'Big Society by Design'. It is based around Dott's role in the Big Society and the statement: "We want to give citizens, communities and local government the power and information they need to come together, solve the problems they face and build the Britain they want."

What are the big challenges facing you in your community?

This is the question that we will be asking citizens of Cornwall in the run up to the launch of Cornwall’s Big Design Challenge.

The Big Design Challenge will bring citizens and communities together with designers and social entrepreneurs to ‘co-design and develop’ their ideas – introducing citizens to innovation and understanding how new social ventures and business opportunities can be achieved - empowering people throughout Cornwall and beyond. Supported by the Technology Strategy Board and in line with the Government’s vision for a Big Society, the challenge is being managed by local service design consultancy SEA Communications

Emerging themes across Dott projects

If Dott Cornwall's March event was a Think Tank, then its summer review event was definitely a Do Tank. Held in July at Viners in the grounds of Carvynck, the event saw all the project teams come together for a day to share their methods and processes – and the successes and problems they have faced.

The ten Dott Cornwall projects draw on the skills and expertise of professional designers, and bring those designers together with communities to work together and follow a creative, collaborative design process.

Play goes on tour

The Play team have recently taken a re-vamped prototype to the St. Just Fair for the Future. Children of all ages were able to help co-design the devices while learning about how energy could be created from their own movements. There are more showcases in the pipeline, including the 8th October at Falmouth Events Square (10 - 6) and 17th October at Chyan Community Field, Penryn (11-2).  Hopefully we will see you there!

New Work's progress

So far the New Work project has engaged with 365 citizens and over 100 stakeholders since it started. The project team have found that the New Work website, Community Reporters, word of mouth and referrals are working particularly effectively. The team are aiming to help another 100 citizens by the end of November. They also have 4 Discovery Days in the diary, keep an eye on the New Work website for more info on this.
